He made history on October 3, 1978, when, in collaboration with gynecologist Dr. Saroj Kanti Bhattacharya and cryobiologist Sunit Mukherji, he became the first doctor in India to carry out an IVF procedure that produced the test tube child "Durga" (also known as Kanupriya Agarwal).
Unfortunately, the state administration (West Bengal Govt.) hounded Dr. Subhash Mukhopadhyay and prevented him from sharing his achievements with the world's scientific community. On June 19, 1981, he killed himself out of rejection. Numerous newspaper articles have been written on his life and death, which served as the basis for the Hindi film Ek Doctor Ki Maut (Death of a Doctor).
